The circle above indicates the area surrounding the Big West refinery that would be put in danger by a release of hydrofluoric acid at the site.

There are over 100 schools as well as hospitals, day care facilities, businesses and hundreds of homes all within five miles of the Big West refinery.

More than 200,000 people live within five miles of the refinery and would be put in danger if hydrofluoric acid is released in Bakersfield.
